Species with insufficient conservation status research (Data-deficient species not listed under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016)

The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee assesses the risk of extinction of species using criteria that are modelled on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categories and criteria. Sometimes the Committee is unable to complete an assessment due to a lack of information.

A species may be identified as data-deficient when there is inadequate information to make a direct, or indirect, assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution and/or population status. A taxon in this category may be well studied, and its biology well known, but appropriate data on abundance and/or distribution are lacking.

Data-deficient does not mean that a species is not of conservation concern. The assessment of taxa in this category indicates that more information is required and acknowledges the possibility that future research will show that a threatened classification is appropriate.

The conservation assessment reports listed below highlight the lack of available information on these species and the information gaps to be targeted to complete an IUCN assessment. If you have information in relation to conservation management research, please make a public nomination to list the species. 

In this table the current reported locations for these species are shown, however, due to the limited information available, it is possible that some species may be found in suitable habitat in other areas of NSW or Australia.
