Statutory review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016

The NSW Government has now responded to the independent review.

An independent panel undertook a review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. The purpose of the review was to determine whether the policy objectives of the Act remain valid and whether the terms remain appropriate for securing those objectives.

The independent review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act was tabled in Parliament on 24 August 2023 by the NSW Minister for Environment and is now published.

About the independent review

The independent review panel was led by Dr Ken Henry AC, and supported by Mr Mike Mrdak AO, Dr John Keniry AM and Distinguished Professor Michelle Leishman. The review was supported by public consultation.

The NSW Government has released a response to both reviews

The government response to the statutory reviews, NSW plan for nature, was released on 17 July 2024.

The response sets out key ambitions, directions and priority actions responding to the statutory reviews.

Key reforms, changes and new programs arising from the response, including any legislative changes, will be subject to detailed consultation with stakeholders and the community.
